So the purpose of a magazine is to have an enticing cover so that people pick it up and buy it, to potentially sell advice or to advertise and sell clothing and accessories. So then the cover of a magazine contains content such as an image, anchorage text and sell lines which helps the magazine to achieve its purpose. For instance, in the sell lines it says ‘makeup that flirts for you.’ This suggests that the makeup will make you look so good that you won’t have to flirt and men will fall for you. This sell line aids the magazine in completing its purpose as then it target audience which are most likely women are then intrigued as to what this makeup is and where they can get it from thus selling the products and in a sense manipulating them into picking up, buying and reading the magazine. I know that the target audience is mature, older females maybe from 20-40 as it says ‘sex moves men crave’.
In terms of the image on the cover, yeah it could be argued that it very much suits this magazine as she is wearing a dress revealing a lot of chest and is giving direct address that is quite seducing. This further does the purpose of the magazine as potentially males may be attracted to her and so may buy the magazine.
First of all the use of having her in big and bold instantly tells the reader what this is going to focus on and so grabs the attention of her target audience which at the moment from this double page spread we have established that this her fans. This double page spread says ‘college students’ which could suggest that they’re trying to relate to a target audience at around the age of 18 as it implies that she was once a college student as well.
This is further conveyed when it says ‘Hayley’s rough school experience’. Trying to relate to a younger audience could be so that they can build a relationship and have long time customers and readers of their magazines as the purpose of magazines is to advertise and sell products and accessories along with the magazine itself.
From this I have understood the purpose of a magazine and how this is connected to their content and target audience. Along with this I have further understood the use of petal and how the image on the cover is linked to the text around.
