When looking at the mode of address on the cover, when it says ‘Get beach body ready’, that could suggest that everyone must intend on being in shape for summer. In terms of appealing to the audience, there is a lot of derogatory terminology such as ‘sexy as hell’ and ‘sex so hot’ implying that this magazine is targeted towards men rather than women. This could also be targeted at people in relationships as it says ‘12 things your bae doesn’t care about.’ However the use of the slang ‘bae’ also suggests that this may also be aimed at a younger audience potentially in their 20s.
When looking at the images displayed, it has Zooey Deschanel displayed taking up the majority or the cover. She has a low cut shirt revealing a lot of cleavage which helps fulfil the magazines purpose which is to get people to pick it up and it read it as this image would and appeal and imply that this is aimed towards males.
So the layout of this double page spread is formal with a white background and black writing along with just one image of Zooey Deschanel who is dressed a lot more formally compared to the cover potentially implying that this part of the magazine is more aimed towards a more intellectual audience that have the time and attention span to sit and read through without losing interest.
In terms of text, there is ‘beauty tips’ written in red which will stand out ahead of the black writing suggesting that this may be aimed toward females of at teenage and above as it talks about mascara under this subheading. The sense of formality is further conveyed as it says ‘We break for lunch and a chat’ which could imply that this double page spread is aimed towards middle aged women. This is backed up when it says ‘her love for old vintage dresses.’
The image on this double page spread is a formally dressed Zooey Deschanel using direct address. Zooey being more covered up than on the cover suggests that this double page spread isn’t aimed towards men who find her attractive, but more towards her fans who are more interested in what she has to say in this interview.
From this task I have learned that a cover and double page spread may appeal to different audiences and how they do so using layout, mode of address, text and images.
